Deep Creek’s yacht-club tradition
Organized sailing is almost as old as the lake’s first generation of summer homes. The federal history of Glendale Road Bridge records Cy Bowers founding the Deep Creek Yacht Club at Turkey Neck in 1937.
The tradition extended well beyond boats. The Deep Creek Yacht Racing Association preserves memories from the club’s first-fifty-years history, including the people who ran races and the committee boat that made them possible. Volunteer work on shore and on the water has always been part of the story.
There is an important distinction for a history site: Deep Creek has two yacht clubs, at Turkey Neck and Deerhaven. This page introduces the shared sailing tradition rather than assuming that the sandwich honors one specific club.
