Deep Creek Lake State Park
Deep Creek Lake was built for electricity, but recreation became an enduring part of its identity. Maryland’s official park chronology records the opening of Deep Creek Lake State Park in 1959, more than three decades after the reservoir was created.
The park brings together shoreline, woodland and the slopes of Meadow Mountain. Its landscape tells a story that is older than beach days: the Brant Coal Mine along Beckmans Trail recalls the region’s working past, while the Discovery Center interprets local natural and cultural history.
Today’s paths and picnic grounds are a reminder that a lake can be both an engineered landscape and a place of shared memories. The park’s role is to make that landscape accessible to people who do not own a piece of its shore.
