Deep Creek’s hydroelectric project
Deep Creek Lake began as infrastructure. The Youghiogheny Hydroelectric Company created the reservoir in 1925, supplying water for a generating station near the Youghiogheny River. The lake that later drew swimmers, sailors and summer homes was first a means of making electricity.
Maryland’s Department of Natural Resources records the station’s entry into service in 1925 and a federal license issued to Pennsylvania Electric Company in 1968. Water released through the project enters the Youghiogheny, linking lake management to a river known for trout and whitewater.
The powerhouse therefore offers a different way to read the scenery: the shore is not only a vacation setting, but part of a working water system. Recreation grew around that original purpose rather than replacing its history.
